Course Description:

What is dyslexia?  Dyslexia means having a hard time to learn.  The word “dyslexia” comes from the foreign (Latin) word “dys,” which means difficult, and the foreign (Greek) word “lexia,” which means difficulty reading words. Students who have learning difficulties like dyslexia have no system in place that supports their ability and desire to learn.  Simply put, they are expected to fail.  This course speaks of a journey toward personal empowerment and profound educational change.

Learning Outcomes:

·     Understanding that Dyslexia reflects a problem within the language system in the brain

·     Know that some smart people can’t read

·     Understanding the student with learning disabilities

·     Learn about accommodations available to the student with learning difficulties.  

·     Be aware of the errors, myths and fallacies that are perceived about students with learning difficulties

·     Be informed about techniques and strategies that help students with learning difficulties
