The occurrence of learning problems in children seems to be on the rise in recent years. Problems that disrupt the educational process more than most are those that affect the emotional stability, attention span and the activity level of the child. The magnitude of the problem is significant, with many engaged in research to find out what has contributed to the increase in childhood behavior and learning disorders. This course will study traits of children with behavior and attention problems. The more we understand, the deeper our repertoire of strategies and techniques.

Many students are not knowledgeable regarding the necessary thinking skills that will help them prevail in today’s competitive world. They lack skills in gathering relevant information, analyzing and evaluating, and finally in decision-making. Our society is highly technical in nature with its fast computers and instant availability of information and communication. It seems we can find information quickly but can we deal with it? Can we interpret, analyze, think it through critically and then use that information for problem solving and decision-making? Though experience teaches us the “hard way”, what could we have been done to make the lessons learned less costly? A knowledge base and guidance proffers to the child principles in the ability to think critically.

CTED 664 Using Technology in the Classroom
2 semester credits

This course will provide background information on using various forms of technology in the classroom.  The use of the interactive white board, Internet, project-base learning, digital camera and video recorder, PowerPoint presentations, Internet interaction, LCD projector and other equipment.  Integrating curriculum materials and preparing a lesson plan will round out the course.

CTED 679 Trends and Issues in Education.
2 semester credits
This course will focus on trends and issues that teachers and the educational system experience.  A review of education from the beginning of compulsory education to the present will be covered.  Influences on education from business, industry, government and society have directed learning in many ways affecting its changes, influences and challenges.  Today the emphasis is phonics, technology, and standardized testing.  Lectures and discussion concerning social skills, cultural diversity, social programs, teacher preparation, professional development and educational programs will be covered.  The use or readings, Internet searches, lectures and discussion will be emphasized.

This course will provide information and practice on the basic skills and fundamental knowledge for lesson planning and implementing the three frameworks of cooperative learning. This course will acquaint the participant with creativity and imagination and the role it plays in learning and teaching.  Using creativity and imagination to create new methods, ideas, strategies and techniques to stimulate students' learning is an important tool for teachers.  An understanding of the traits, characteristics, components and steps towards fostering a creative classroom will be studied.  Questions like: What is creativity? Who is creative? What can creativity achieve? Is imagination important? These questions and the understanding of what makes an environment conducive to inspiring creativity and imagination will be included.

Hands-on art. Provides strategies that stimulate creativity, enhance visual/spatial perception, refine motor skills and help hand-eye coordination. Covered are basic techniques of cardboard construction, origami, sketching, paper engineering, sculpturing and stamp-making. Participants will learn to use art as a means to help stimulate and motivate student learning.

CTED 529 The Misunderstood Child
An overview of learning differences and disabilities that provides a study of the assessment, evaluation and diagnosis of the child with sensory integration, autism, dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, LD and giftedness.  Course provides guidance in implementing plans for maximizing the child's strengths in learning and adapting when challenged by weaknesses

CTED 563 Autism in your Classroom
The course is a guide for teachers helping students in the classroom who are perceived to be on the Autism Spectrum.  The empasis will be on academic, social, and cognitive studies.

CTED 695 Understanding Autism
The course provides an opportunity in understanding Autism Spectrum disorders.  Participants will learn about the basic background of ASD, including different strategies, techniques and reading about unique one of a kind ways in helping students with learning.

CTED 775 The Out-of-Sync Child: Sensory Integration
Sensory Integration is the overlooked problem for students with learning problems. Have a child in class whose out-of-control, acts differently than others, disrupts class, makes your day stressful? Research indicates that 70% of children with learning disabilities have some sensory integration processing problems. This course will help you as a teacher to understand the out-of-bound child in a new light. The information obtained from this course will help make your classroom more conducive to learning for the difficult, disruptive and sensitive child.

CTED 895 Internet Content for the Classroom:
A course that provides K-12 websites for teachers with a step-by-step path to navigate the world of information on the Internet to help you move swiftly and efficiently through a portfolio of high quality secure Web Sites.  The course will provide new opportunities to enhance classroom lessons by weaving Internet information and activities with lesson plans correlated with standards. All disciplines will be covered K-12.

CTED 973 Learning Differences in Boys and Girls
This course will show the learning differences between boys and girls that help in understanding how they learn. The course will address a number of areas in which boys and girls differ in learning behavior, brain function and language development. Balancing the inequities between boys and girls will also be covered.
